ROBERTA NEWBERRY RATLIFF
Abingdon,VA- Roberta Newberry Ratliff, age 90, passed away Thursday, November 2, 2017 at English Meadows in Abingdon, VA. Born in Cannady, VA, she was a daughter of the late Jesse A. and Fannie Viers Newberry. She was a graduate of Council High School and attended Radford College. She retired from the Ben Franklin Store in Grundy where she had worked for 40 years. She enjoyed her time at the store especially her coworkers and customers. After moving to Abingdon, she worked as a volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital in the gift shop which allowed her to continue in retail. She was a member of First Christian Church of Abingdon and previous member of Little Prater Church of Christ before moving. She lived her last 23 years in Abingdon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ratliff who passed April 15, 1990, sisters, Lucille Duty and Ester Owens and brothers, Furl and Willard Newberry.
Survivors include a daughter, Freda R. Bridwell and husband Charles of Abingdon, a son, Steve Ratliff and wife Kim of Hickory, NC, a sister, Bernice Gilley of New Albany, IN, three grandchildren, Austin and Alex Bridwell and Kristin Ratliff and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Bridwell. The family would like to thank English Meadows and Caris Healthcare for the care they gave during her sickness.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 5, 2017 at First Christian Church in Abingdon with Tom Crise officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, at the Newberry Cemetery, Vansant, VA. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at the church on Sunday prior to funeral service.
