Haysi, VA- Robert Newland Willis, age 76 of Lazarus Branch, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, KY. Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Charles Earsel and Odra Colley Willis. He served as Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army, during Vietnam receiving the Bronze Star. He was owner and manager of a restaurant and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Lee Willis, a son, David Willis, sisters, Elizabeth Edwards, Sandra Powers and Lois Yates, brothers, Johnny Willis, Bobby Gene Willis and Terry Willis.
Survivors include a daughter, Nanette (James) Sykes and a son, Jess (Candilyn) Willis both of Haysi, grandchildren, Justin (Aimee) Sykes of Haysi, Samantha (Edward Deel) Sykes of Haysi, Kelcie of Roanoke, Matthew Forton of Haysi, Jaxton Willis of Haysi and Lochlan Willis of Haysi, great-grandchildren, Jadyn and Braylen Sykes and Axl Deel all of Haysi, a sister, Toni Fuller of Haysi, a brother-in-law, Jerry Mitchell of San Francisco, CA, a sister-in-law, Teresa Cavanagh of Denver, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder Noah Kim Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Rebecca Willis Cemetery, Haysi, VA. Nephews and cousins will serve as pallbearers. VA Army National Guard Honor Team and Clintwood VFW Post # 7360 will conduct military graveside rites.
