Haysi, VA- Stella Sykes, age 95 of Travis Stanley Road, passed away Monday, February 8, 2010 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Clintwood, VA. Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Nancy Jane Viers Davis. She was a homemaker and attended Tarpon Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben G. Sykes, daughters, Murrell Vanover and husband James and Edna Mullins and husband Jimmy, a granddaughter, Mindy Wells Davis, a sister, Dorothy Newberry and brothers, Stewart, Mackado, Holly and a infant brother.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Allene (Curtis) Sullivan of Clintwood, Vivian (Bill) Kandratos of Greeneville, NC and Lillian (Jim) Counts of Haysi, three sons, Dallas (Bobbye) Sykes of Canton, MI, Glen (Linda) Sykes of Haysi and Leon (Dinah) Sykes of Abingdon, a brother, Arthur Davis of Haysi, a sister, Delphia Newberry of Kingsport, TN, 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren and 8 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 12, 2010 at the Haysi Funeral Home with Jerry Robinson and Jerry Vitatoe officiating. Burial will follow in the Sykes-Frazier Cemetery, Clintwood, VA. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers.
